Transition from Deflagration to Detonation in Layered Dust Explosions
نویسنده
چکیده
Dust layers on the bottom of mine tunnels, on fac toy floors, or on the floors of gruin elevator passages are the most frequent cause of highly destructive dust explosions. Typically, such layered dust explosions involve a high velocity, acceleruting, turbulent flame which is fed by the dust layer and results in high clestructivt' static and dynamic pressures. In some cases transition to detonation has been observed, and such explosions are the most destructive. Scientific studies of such layered dust explosions, conducted at the University of Michigan, are discussed.

Flame-driven Deflagration-to-detonation Transitions in Type Ia Supernovae?
Although delayed detonation models of thermonuclear explosions of white dwarfs seem promising for reproducing Type Ia supernovae, the transition of the flame propagation mode from subsonic deflagration to supersonic detonation remains hypothetical. A potential instant for this transition to occur is the onset of the distributed burning regime, i.e. the moment when turbulence first affects the i...
متن کاملFlame Acceleration and Transition from Deflagration to Detonation in Hydrogen Explosions
Computational fluid dynamics based solvers have been developed for explosion modeling in hazards analysis. These include a numerical approach to simulate flame acceleration and deflagration to detonation transition in hydrogen-air mixture and two detonation solvers. The former solves fully compressible, multidimensional, transient, reactive Navier–Stokes equations with a chemical reaction mecha...
متن کاملA Subgrid-scale Model for Deflagration-to-Detonation Transitions in Type Ia Supernova Explosion Simulations
Context. A promising model for normal Type Ia supernova (SN Ia) explosions are delayed detonations of Chandrasekhar-mass white dwarfs, in which the burning starts out as a subsonic deflagration and turns at a later phase of the explosion into a supersonic detonation. The mechanism of the underlying deflagration-to-detonation transition (DDT) is unknown in detail, but necessary conditions have b...
متن کاملType Ia Supernova Explosion: Gravitationally Confined Detonation
We present a new mechanism for Type Ia supernova explosions in massive white dwarfs. The proposed scenario follows from relaxing the assumption of symmetry in the model and involves a detonation created in an unconfined environment. The explosion begins with an essentially central ignition of stellar material initiating a deflagration. This deflagration results in the formation of a buoyantly-d...
متن کاملDelayed detonations in full-star models of Type Ia supernova explosions
Aims. We present the first full-star three-dimensional explosion simulations of thermonuclear supernovae including parameterized deflagration-to-detonation transitions that occur once the flame enters the distributed burning regime. Methods. Treating the propagation of both the deflagration and the detonation waves in a common front-tracking approach, the detonation is prevented from crossing a...
